Lami Philip’s Biography (Source: Official Website )

Lami Phillips (LAMI) was born in Chicago, Illinois, where she spent her early years. She later moved back to Nigeria with her parents and siblings, where she went through elementary school at Corona School, Victoria Island. While there, she won a talent competition that helped her realize her love for singing and entertaining. She moved to England in her teenage years and lived there for about eleven years, later returning to and the United States.

Growing up, Lami was always surrounded by all genres of music, as her parents and siblings were all music enthusiasts. She found that she was naturally inclined to RnB, Soul and Jazz, from an early age, and would write songs and make herself mixtapes to listen to, of all her favorite artists. Her music interests ranged from the likes of Tupac Shakur, to Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Kim Burell, Jill Scott, Sade, Otis Redding and many more. She laughs as she remembers the first song she wrote was when she was 8yrs old, I really thought I could mail it to Walt Disney and get it on their next project. All my siblings still remember the song though, so it means its still a hit haha! Who knows? I may still record and release it someday.

She loved entertaining at an early age with her friends they would all dress up and perform at each others birthday parties for the heck of it. She never really thought of music as a career choice, but more as something she loved to do. However, while studying in the UK, Lami started taking vocal lessons and joined the choir at her church (Jesus House, UK). This was the turning point in her life. She said too many strangers would walk up to her and say You gotta do something with that voice. So she took to the stage and started performing professionally.

While gaining momentum in her world of music, she completed her BA (Hons) at University of Kent, then her MA degree from the University of Nottingham. She then moved back to the United States and started taking professional vocal lessons again. By this time, she had started songwriting professionally also, and was looking into a debut album. Lami is someone with an endless thirst for knowledge, impacted by her parents love for education, and decided to get yet another degree while in the United States an Executive MBA from Pennsylvania State University.

A few years after completing her MBA, she decided to take a risk and return to Lagos, Nigeria, to start working on her debut album. Knowing well that her music inclination, soul music, was not popular in Nigeria, she still decided it was worth the risk, drawing inspiration from the likes of Seal and Sade, who are Nigerians that have successfully taken their soul brands worldwide. According to Lami, the musical journey was taking forever because she kept seeking the perfect team, perfect moment, perfect opportunity, and the perfect songs until it occurred to her that sometimes perfect is overrated. She figured that if the music has meaning, if the music has soul, and if the music makes a difference, then she had done all she set out to achieve.

Some of her notable singles includes “Baby ft. Kel; Mo’Cheddah, Orimiwu ft. Iceprince, Yago ft. Iceprince”
